France the Great Upheaval

Over the last half-century, France has embarked on a profound transformation. Once recognized as the world's fifth economic superpower, the nation has steadily lost ground on the global stage. In France the Great Upheaval, acclaimed author and analyst Daniel Boeri delivers a sharp, sweeping assessment of the nation's political, economic, and sociological evolution from the fires of May 1968 to the volatile streets of the 2020s.

Boeri critically unpacks the fundamental paradox of modern France: a country that champions the ideals of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity, yet struggles with declining public services, falling birth rates, a fracturing educational framework, and an exploding national debt. With a compounding tax burden ranked among the highest in the Western world, public discontent has reached a fever pitch, manifesting in historic upheavals like the Yellow Vest movement, violent urban riots, and mass strikes against sweeping pension reforms.

Tracing the legacies and missteps of every president from Georges Pompidou to Emmanuel Macron, Boeri exposes a deep, systemic disconnect between the "top" sphere of political decree and the reality of the population "below". He illustrates how a leadership style detached from societal sentiment has alienated citizens, paving the way for political violence, institutional distrust, and a profound crisis of social attachment.

Yet, this book is not merely an autopsy of decline. It is a vital exploration of the massive, inescapable challenges shaping France’s future—from the disruptions of Artificial Intelligence and global economic shifts toward the Indo-Pacific, to the urgent demands of the climate crisis.

Drawing wisdom from classical thinkers like Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus, alongside modern sociology, France the Great Upheaval is a powerful, clear-eyed evaluation of a nation at a historic crossroads. It poses an urgent question for the future of France: can the country shift its focus from empty ideology to true efficiency, merit, and human relationship before the train of globalization leaves it behind completely?
